Application Stories - Sensors and Instruments in Industrial Automation

(Or, how do they... Display weight information
a great distance from a scale)

Electronic weight indicators (instruments which attach to load cells, measure load cell signals and convert to weight) often has a serial data output port for transmission of data to computers or display devices. On making a weight measurement, the indicator outputs the data to its serial port.

The serial port's communication line characteristics span a wide range of possibilities. The device receiving data from the scale must have its serial port settings the same as the scale's so that it can interpret the data correctly. In some sense, the receiving device must know the sender's language and dialect in order to understand the data. With a large number of different scales available, the varied combinations of data rates and data formats makes installation of remote displays difficult.

Until the Scanning Devices Smart Remote Display, that is!

Scanning Devices Smart Remote Displays can analyze data incoming on their serial port and automatically determine the serial data characteristics in use by the transmitting scale. Then, serial data characteristics can be set automatically. Installers need not know the transmission characteristics of the data sources in order to install the Scanning Devices Smart Remote Displays.
