Scanning Devices Target Barcode System

High-speed Fixed Mount Scanners for Moving Targets

Product Overview

The Scanning Devices Target Barcode System provides barcode verification of automatic assembly operations. It insures that printed barcodes on labels or products are readable and correct.

  • Reads barcodes from moving or positioned products and labels, compares barcodes with correct Target Barcode, sets output depending on success in reading. The output is suitable for machine control.
  • Reports both NO-READ and BAD-CODE Errors.
  • Reads Fast - barcodes need be in view for as little as 10 milliseconds (contact Scanning Devices for specifics on your application) allowing inspection of small or fast-moving barcodes.
  • Multiple barcode readers - supports 1 to 4 barcode scanners. All scanners inspect for a common Target Barcode.
  • Fast Setup - New Target Barcodes can be keyed or scanned into memory. Scanners can be activated or deactivated from the operator keypad.
  • Simple operation - Target Barcodes setup is stored in permanent memory and retained until changed. On power-up, the last setup is recalled and can be restarted with two keystrokes.
  • Straightforword interfaces - Connects directly to PLC, computer or other control device DC inputs and outputs for automatic high speed sequential operation. For controlelrs with AC I/O, use Scanning Devices optical isolated interface modules.
  • Reads most commom codes: Code 39, UPC/EAN, Code 128, Codabar, Interleaved 2 of 5 Code.
  • Security keyswitch provides operator/supervisor access control for setup, count reset or error resolution.

Operating Sequence

The Barcode System readies scanners and turns on "Ready" output to PLC, computer or controller. PLC or computer responds by feeding a label or product barcode and turns on barcode "Trigger" input.

Alternately, barcodes are feed continuously with a sensor detecting items and generating the "Trigger" input. The system output changes state if an error is detected, allowing external logic and mechanism to stop, divert or alter feeding in response to the error.

Barcode system reponds to external "Trigger" by turning off its "Ready" output and attempting to read barcodes. All active barcode scanners are triggered simultaneously. If all active scanners read a label or product barcode and find it equal to the Target code, the barcode system "Ready" output is immediately turned on, indicating that this group of barcodes is readable and equal to the Target code - a Good Read. The PLC, computer or control mechanism can then feed the next item or product barcode to continue the sequence. If one or more scanners does not read a barcode while the input trigger is asserted, the "Ready" output remains off and the operator display advises of "no read(s)" at specific scanners.

The operator/supervisor is asked to clear the error(s) and report via the keypad. The system's "Ready" output remains off and should be interpreted by the PLC Computer or Controller as a signal to prevent feeding the next label or product barcode.

If one or more scanners reads a barcode and finds it to be not equal to the Target Barcode, the "Ready" output remains off and the operator display advises of "bad code(s)" at the specific scanners. The operator is asked to clear the error and report via the keyboard before the "Ready" output is turned on and the PLC/Computer is allowed to continue.

Component Descriptions and Specifications
Panel-mounted Target System Controller with operator keypad/display
  • Stores the Target barcode, system setup parameters and operator messages.
  • Controls input and output to external devices.
  • Communicates to scan controllers and barcode scanners.
  • Constructed with sealed 16-button keypad and 2 line, 16 character LCD display on stainless steel plate.
  • Back-lighted display enhances viewing.
  • Requires 5" x 9" panel space, 8" x 4.25" panel cutout; 6" depth behind the mounting panel.
  • Mounting holes for #6 screws
  • Connects to external I/O: PLC, Computer, KeySwitch by means of a six-foot, 2 twisted pair cable.
  • External device interface is consistent with current-sinking NPN transistors.
Barcode Scanners
  • Reduces mounting space requirements, allows installation in tight spaces.
  • Uses a rotating mirror to sweep a laser beam across a barcode in a rastered line and collects light reflected to read the code.
  • Mounts 3-5 inches from the barcode (depending on barcode type and size)
  • Oriented so that sweep enters barcode on one side and exits opposite, perpendicular to the bar orientation.
  • Mechanical dimensions: 1.75" x 1.75" x .87".
  • Mounts via 2 #6-32 tapped mounting holes. Note: proper mounting of the barcode scanner head relative to the product barcode or label is critical to successful operation of the Target System.
System Power Supply
  • Automatically selects 110 or 220 VAC input power.
  • Provides regulated 5 VDC power for all system components.
  • Input power connects by screw terminals or quick-disconnect style connector.
  • Dimensions: 5" x 3.5" x 1.5"
Options
  • Operator Keyswitch
  • Optically Isolated AC or DC Input/Output Module
  • Counting Module - Capable of keeping track of good reads, no reads or bad codes on each channel or in the aggregate. Counters set and reset from the operator keypad. Module mounts in target controller
  • Network Interface - An RS232 Communications Link to a PC, PLC or other serial device. Responds to a series of commands to upload or download the Target Barcode, upload or reset counts.
