Portable Temperature Logging System

The Temperature Sensor and Logger - Thermochron iButton

The Scanning Devices Portable Temperature Logger System uses the Dallas Semiconductor Thermochron iButton to measure and log temperature. Thermochron iButtons log temperatures at specified time intervals and store data for later retrieval.

The iButton is a small, industrially packaged instrument, suited for installation in a fixed location to monitor and log temperature at that point or to be packaged and shipped with goods to monitor and log their temperature in transit.

Thermochron iButtons provide a wide range of setup options to define a logging "mission", specifying how and when temperature measurments are made and how results are reported. The PC or Palm Handheld System sets these options automatically with a few taps on the screen to make the Thermochron iButton perform to your commands.

Once setup and launched, a thermochron iButton mission measures and stores temperature data at specified intervals, storing 2048, 4096 or 8192 measurements, depending on model and setup. The setup options specifying mission operations are described below, illustrating the flexibility in applying Portable Temperature Logger and the Thermochron iButton to many varied temperature logging situations.

Six Thermochron iButton models can be used with Portable Temperature Logger, providing variety in temperature range and measurement precision. See System Configurations for specifications on the iButton models.

Thermochron Mission Setup and Information Options using PC or Handheld
  • Mission Number - User-assigned text identifier displayed in the Palm database view
  • Mission Name - User's text descriptor to further identify the logging activity
  • iButton ID - Factory-assigned unique iButton serial number - read an iButton with Palm and find it in the Palm database using the unique iButton ID
  • Status - stopped, running, alarm conditions - read at any time to display logging status on Palm
  • Time and Date mission started - a reference point, read and display on the Palm Screen
  • Time and Date of reading - data may be read while in logging is in progress, use this data element to identify the reading.
  • High and Low Alarm Set Points - user-assigned values, learn if measured temperature has deviated from standards defined by high and low alarms.
  • Sampling Period (minutes or seconds) - user-assigned sampling frequency.
  • Mission Start and End Date and Time - set the start date and time with the Palm Calendar and calculate or set the date and time when logging memory is filled base on frequency
  • Notes - user-entered text information stored in the iButton for display on the handheld screen.
  • Number of temperature samples recorded - read while logging to learn progress
  • Total samples recorded by this iButton - historic data to judge life of the iButton
